Decapinol Oral Rinse has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a prescription gingivitis treatment. This new treatment fights gingivitis, a common gum disease afflicting most adults at some point in their lives, by diminishing the ability of bacteria to attach to tooth surfaces and cause dental plaque.

Clinical studies tested adults with mild to severe gingivitis using Decapinol in comparison to either an antimicrobial rinse or no treatment. When used with recommended flossing and brushing, these studies indicated that Decapinol reduces gingivitis up to 60% in comparison to no treatment.

Decpinol is regulated as a medical device rather than a drug since it uses a substance called a surfactant to create a physical barrier to gingivitis bacteria instead of acting chemically. Decapinol Oral Rinse is not recommended for use by pregnant women and has been approved for use by persons at least twelve years old when regular oral hygiene is inadequate in gingivitis prevention. Sinclair Pharmaceutical Limited, based in the United Kingdom manufactures this product.
